Project overview
An underwater youth assembly in the Caribbean.
195in365 proposes an extraordinary underwater youth assembly in the Caribbean, designed in the form of the United Nations General Assembly Hall.
The event will bring together 195+ young representatives from countries around the world to symbolically vote underwater on five urgent ocean issues.
The assembly will create a powerful global message from young people calling for greater protection of our oceans and future.
The vote
Five urgent ocean issues
- Global implementation of a Global Plastics Treaty
- A global ban on deep-sea mining
- A global ban on bottom trawling
- Action on pollution entering our oceans
- Implementation of the High Seas Treaty
Why the Caribbean?
195in365 believes the region is a powerful place to deliver this global message, as it receives the brunt of the effects of climate change.
On the day
The experience
The underwater assembly will be designed as a semi-circular amphitheatre, with a central podium and seating representing participating countries.
Yachts and supporting vessels will surround the venue, while international media and underwater cameras will provide a live global broadcast.
The assembly will be symbolically opened with a ceremonial passing of the gavel from the founder generation to the youth generation.
How it works
The youth vote
Before the event, participating young people will engage with schools, universities, environmental organisations and communities in their respective countries.
A digital platform will allow people to learn about and vote on the five issues.
Country representatives will then cast their underwater votes based on the results from their respective countries.
The results will be announced live from the underwater assembly.
After the assembly
Global message and legacy
Following the assembly, a closing event and international press conference will be held on land.
195in365 and government representatives will present the youth findings and call for governments, institutions and international organisations to consider the message and take meaningful action to protect the world’s oceans.
195 countries. One underwater assembly. One shared message for our oceans.
